Succulent Best Practices: What to Plant Your Succulents In

Planting succulents is pretty straightforward, but there’s a lot you can do to start your plants off on the right foot. One of the biggest things I’ve learned is this; what you plant your succulents in matters.

If you haven’t already, check out steps 1 and 2 of planting your succulents. These posts cover the basic supplies you’ll need to get started with your succulents, as well as a step-by-step tutorial on how to plant a succulent.

When I first got my succulents, I started off on the wrong foot and a lot of my succulents are still on the wrong foot! The mistake I made: planting my succulents in glass bowls. Oh they were cute. I got decorative river rocks and white rocks and black and white sand. I layered all of that in the pretty glass bowls and cups and had the cutest succulents. And this was all great, until it came time to water my succulents. I tend to over-water, or at least I did in the beginning. My problem had always been under-watering, so succulents were a new change for this plant killer. I over-watered my plants and glass bowls without drainage holes did not accommodate my lead hand (is that a thing?)

My one saving grace was the larger rocks I had put at the bottom of the glass bowls. They helped keep the succulent roots a little bit more separated from the pool of water and is probably the only reason a lot of those plants are still alive. I lost a few succulents this way, and I’m not saying to completely avoid pretty glass bowls, cute little tea cups and ceramic dishes, but when you’re a beginner plant mom or dad who might have a slight issue with over-watering, maybe stick to plastic and terracotta pots that have drain holes. I keep a lot of my succulents in cute colorful planter pots and the little trays have been perfect for when I do happen to over-water (like I said, still not a great plant mom but I’m getting there!)

Another thing you can plant succulents in are adorable terracotta pots. They even come with saucers to help with over-watering mishaps. There’s just something I love about the look of succulents in terracotta pots, so classic.

If you’re looking for a chic way to plant your succulent and are up for a little DIY project, check this out. A tin can from those veggies you used for dinner last night + some rose gold spray paint (I’ve been through way too many cans of this stuff. Love it!) and you’ve got yourself some chic copper tins for planting.

Love marble? Same. I’ve covered my nightstand and desktop in this marble contact paper and love it! I’ve even used some of those leftover pieces to turn tin cans into marble planters (to be completely honest, I tried mixing a tin can, the rose gold spray paint, and the marble contact paper and the result was not good. I should really just stick to one obsession). Another great thing about these tin cans is that you can use a hammer and nail to poke holes in the bottom of the can to allow for draining.

Want something a little more rough, try using a concrete spray on your tin can. I love this look for a more manly or industrial look!
