FAQ About Succulents

Personal:

What kinds of succulents that you have?
To be completely honest. I. Don’t. Know.
Maybe this makes me a bad plant owner, but I have absolutely no idea what all the different kinds of plants are. I know what Jade plants look like, but that’s as far as my naming goes!

How many succulents do you have?
Last time I counted I had 53 full grown succulents and over 50 babies that are being grown from propagated leaves. It’s definitely over 100, but those little ones are so hard to count!

Plants:

How often should I water my plants?
This depends on so many factors! I know people who water almost weekly and people who water once a month. It depends on the size of your pot, whether it has drainage holes, how deep the soil is, and the weather. A general rule of thumb; wait until the soil is completely dried out and then get it wet again. You want to stress the roots out a little bit by making them thirsty for water. It’s how you grow strong plants.

How much sunlight do my succulents need? Can I grow them indoors?
You can absolutely grow succulents indoors. Just make sure to keep them in a room with some sunshine coming through. Put them outside on warm days or in window sills every once in awhile if you don’t have them in a bright enough room. My apartment gets no direct sunlight whatsoever, but my plants are doing just fine from the light they do get.

What is propagation? Is it hard to do, and can I do it?
Propagation is one of those succulent things that you might want to hold off on until you feel pretty comfortable with keeping your plants alive. But it isn’t hard to do at all! Propagation is simply creating more succulents from cuttings. You can read more about how to turn one plant into ten here! (insert link to blog post)
